Cereal box bookmarks

This is a simple project that will save your books from dog ears and your cardboard from the trash. Simply pull out your colorful cardboard packages, flatten them out and cut them into strips about 1 1/2" x 6". A paper cutter will give you a more consistent cut. And any size strip will do, really, as long as it fits in your book.
Trim your corners with a corner rounding tool (or the old-fashioned way with scissors or an X-acto). I like this tool because it's sturdy enough for light cardboard, you can see the paper as you punch it without flipping the tool over, and the squeeze is easy on your fingers.
Lastly, punch a hole in the top and thread it with a matching ribbon.

On a personal note, I don't read as often as I'd like. I will never put a list of books read during the year on my blog because it is just embarrassing. However, I did just finish a good one.
I'm betting that some of you are fans of the period pieces from Jane Austen, the Brontes, etc. I enjoy these books and can't get enough of the videos.
I've just recently watched the BBC's adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. I loved it and immediately went out to get the book. This is the book I just completed by stealing away a few minutes at a time into the bathroom, catching a few pages while putting the baby down for a nap, and reading by booklight as long as my eyes could stand it after everyone else had gone to bed. This is the only Elizabeth Gaskell book I've read, but I'm inspired to start another.
What book have you read recently (or not so recently) that you couldn't put down?

  2. I'm thinking about using this great idea in my third grade classroom...just altered a bit. Get the cereal boxes, make a cardstock template for the kids to trace around and then they'll cut it out themselves. Not quite as fancy, but kid made...and me NOT making 20 of them! :-)
As for the book recommendation...I HIGHLY suggest The Women’s Murder Club books by James Patterson. There was a show on ABC based on these books last season starring Angie Harmon that fell victim to that nasty writer’s strike. I discovered the books over the summer and they’re a fun (if you call solving murders fun I guess), fairly quick read. I just finished 7th Heaven, Patterson’s latest in the series.

  5. Great for our playgroup craft! My bookclub all agreed (something RARE) that we loved, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". A mouthful of a title, but the book was a short, easy, charming read about WWII.

  7. What a creative idea...and recycling at the same time!

I just finished reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Couldn't put it down.

  8. Couldn't put down Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, till I realised I was getting near the end of it, and then I almost didn't dare read it because I didn't want it to be over.

  9. My daughter is a first year Junior Girl Scout this year and is responsible for teaching two of the Girl Scout laws to the Daisies in her troop for her upcoming meeting. One of the laws she has to teach is "use your resources wisely". She plans to use this as her activity to teach this to the girls.
I have finally given in to reading the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. I finished the first book, Twilight, and really liked it. I am now reading the second book in the series, New Moon. I know I'm "too old" to be reading these, but I think that these books bring me back to when I was young. I think that is why I'm enjoying them so much.

  11. I just love this idea. I am always looking for simple crafts to do with my middle school advisor/advisee group in the mornings. We only have 25 minutes together each day. This is a good way to get the kids recycling and reading. aI think I am going to put out a call for cereal boxes today! We may just do this next week. Thanks!

  18. Love the One You're With by Emily Giffin was a great read. I couldn't stop reading it, and then was so sad when I finished it. I want a sequel!

  19. Elizabeth Gaskell was Charlotte Bronte's dearest friend and mentor and wrote her biography "The Life of Charlotte Bronte." A very good read. Another set of interesting books about the life of the Brontes in sort of a historical fiction style (although very well researched and with all the important facts and even most details correct) is "Dark Quartet," about the Bronte's early years and "Path to the Silent Country," about Charlotte's life after the death of her siblings. Both are by Lynne Reid Banks and are definately worth having around. I've read them umpteen times, and anyone with the remotest interest in the Brontes would enjoy them. Because the style is written as more of a fiction feel, they are easy to read in bits here and there, too-which is always a plus as a mom!

  20. I know I'm kinda late at the party, but I wanted to post a comment anyway. These bookmarks are so cute. I am sorta in charge of the crafts for our Craft group that meets every Thursday here in the Senior Retirement Center where I live. Believe me, it gets hard to come up with a new and interesting craft every week. When we started this last year, I didn't want us making silly little things my grandchildren make in the 3rd-4th grade. We do have a good time and we have made some cute things.
I also wanted to comment on reading. That's one of my favorite past times. I love anything by James Patterson. He also writes the Alex Cross books, and he recently wrote a non-fiction book about the murder of King Tut the "boy king." I recently heard that after two years "they" have decided that he died from complications from a broken leg. But Patterson says "taint so! He was poisoned" I also like Robert B. Parker, he wrote the Spenser books (remember the TV show? Loved it!) and the Jesse Stone books. They're on TV every so often. You also need to watch the DVD of Pride and Prejudice with Collin Firth (not the newer one) and Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet. Both are excellent. Thanks for listening.
