Social lactivist for a day

Last Friday I took my kids, met up with a friend and hung around Lincoln Square as part of a "nurse-in," held in reaction to an incident where a woman was publicly hassled for breastfeeding outdoors.
In my years of nursing in public, I was never hassled by a stranger, but I do know the difficulty in wanting to modestly feed your baby while carrying on with your life outside of home. It is not easy. So we donned the International Breastfeeding Symbol stickers and played and visited and watched as nursing moms were interviewed by television reporters.
You can find multiple versions of the story online. Here is the Chicago Sun-Times version.

  1. go team go! its sad to me that someone would find breastfeeding indecent! especially with those adorable coverups they have for us lucky moms these days.....and those teeny tiny baby toes sticking out from under them.

  2. I think I've said it over and over but that was one of the most shocking things about becoming a mother and choosing to nurse-- that society makes you feel bad if you choose not to breastfeed (or if you're unable to) and yet everywhere you go you're made to feel uncomfortable about doing it! Argh. More power to you for showing support for that mom.

  3. I love Mr. Jeff Hooker's opinion that women showing their breasts in public is indecent, unless its on a beach. Who saw that coming? Breasts are always associated with sex, even though they aren't necessarily a part of the act itself, and it amazes me that in this day and age, using them to feed a baby and keep it alive and happy is still shunned by people! Other women and mothers, at that! I have nursed 3 healthy children, for a combined total of 7 years. Anyone thinking they could have ever taken that natural right away from me better look out. Way to go for showing your support!

  6. yay moms! i was surprised to hear it was a woman who complained :( honestly, i don't think i have ever seen even the slightest flash of skin of anyone who was nursing in public. i am on my third and i can't imagine not being able to go out and about because people felt it was indecent. what's indecent is all the men of various ages feeling the need to go topless all summer long - they need to cover up!

  7. I wish I had known about this and in my neighborhood no less! It's so disappointing that this is still an issue for some people and that "nurse ins" even need to be held. Everyone should have the right to eat when and where they need to, even babies. Props to you for supporting their rights :)
