Oh yeah, cotton balls
Recently, during one of my rounds of nursery duty at co-op, I brought along a bag of cotton balls. The babies (one and two year olds) enjoyed emptying out the bag and using the cotton balls to fill containers, in this case the seats of little riding cars. I counted to see how many they could squeeze in and they found that amusing. We lined up the cotton balls in rows, balanced them on our heads, stuffed them in our shirts, etc.
Then one day at home, while the baby was a bit fussy and I was trying to work in the kitchen, I pulled out the same bag of cotton balls and let her use them with my pots and big plastic utensils. She had a ball transferring them from pot to pot with the big spoons. She was having so much fun that the big kids had to join in.
They're still using the same cotton balls but they've traveled to the kiddie kitchen. Pretty soon they'll be too gross to use anymore, but we've gotten quite a bit of fun out of them. Sometimes I just forget about these simple activities.

OMG I love your blog!! I will have to try the spagetti dogs & the cotton balls with my 2yr old grandson. You are right about the simple things. The kids get to use their imagination more with less structured toys.
Sounds like what my kids used to do with styrofoam peanuts. We called them "squiggles", and they had all kinds of fun playing with them... hauling them in trucks, etc., while I sewed.
Oh I like that... My kids love when I give them beans or rice to play with, but cotton balls would be so much easier to clean up!
We did this with our little home-school preschool group. I filled a tote with them so there were plenty for 4 kids. After the day we use them we pack them up and bring them out a week or two later and they are excited all over again. I have even had kids swimming in the tote of cotton balls, too fun! And we love to use them in the little kitchen too! That is where they get the most use! ( other than our swimmer boy!) :)
Awwww...I love that photo.
So simple, engrossing (until gross), and most notably...QUIET. Great idea!
That's a great idea! I tried to do the same thing with beans one day, but it got really messy. I think cotton balls would be perfect! Thanks....
Thanks for this idea! My 13 month old just recently discovered a bag of styrofoam cups and played and played with them. It was hilarious!
I can't wait to try this. I love the fact that you can use them more than once. When my son was little if I needed a little rest a few paper towels would entertain him. He loved to tear them into a thousand pieces and strew them all over the room. It made a big mess, but occasionally it was worth it.
My mother used to have the kids at my and my siblings' birthday parties wear blindfolds and see how many cotton balls we could get into a pot with a spatula. I'd totally forgotten about that, but it's a great idea for everyday fun!
I love your blog and your creative talent, I just wanted to let you know I gave you an award on my blog! thethriftychick.blogspot.com - Stacey

The kids do love playing with cotton balls, but be cautious and watch them closely - a child we know almost choked on one... they are quite difficult to remove from the airway.
I used your cotton ball activity at co-op preschool this morning. I blogged about it here. thanks!
