Yarn ball

I was reminded of this activity by The Crafty Crow yesterday and thought it looked like fun to try with my kids. Hmm. It didn't work as well as I'd hoped. First of all, the yarn wouldn't really stick to the balloon so it was frustrating for the kids. They would drape the strings on, then the strings would fall right off. I increased the amount of glue and tried to really soak the yarn. The kids just couldn't get into it and quickly quit, but I stuck with it and did eventually get the ball covered. I dumped some of the remaining glue solution over the ball when I was finished for good measure. I let it dry overnight. Some of the strings felt pretty stiff (where I strung the line through to hang it), but most of them still felt pretty yarn-like, soft, and shapeless (the photo is a little deceiving). I'm not sure what I could have done to make this work better. More soaking?

I love the vivid colors you used. Too bad it didn't turn out just right. Maybe someone will have a suggestion!

Perhaps it was the yarn you used?

Love your blog...and I may have an answer to the soft yarn problem...this same project is in the book "PreSchool Art" by MaryAnn Kohl. Her material and instructions are all the same with one exception, no glue. Kohl recommends using extra strong liquid starch (bought in granulated form). Can't tell you if the outcome would be different, so now I might have to go try it myself to find out!

That looks so bright and lovely. I tried a similar thing with my kids using the liquid starch instead of glue and it was a total disaster - wouldn't stick, fell off, fell apart etc. I wouldn't have minded if it came out looking like yours!

I think the crafty crow one was using string, so it is harder to start with. I think wool/yarn maybe is too soft? I dont have any string, so was going to use yarn... maybe i wont now?

I forgot what they are called, but there are wax covered yarns you can buy at Hobby Lobby in the kids' craft section, maybe you could try this project with those. They wouldn't stay real stiff like with glue, but I think they'd sort of hold up! :-)

we did it the other day & dipped it into clear acrylic colour before hanging it up to dry, it worked great, way better than the first time we tried it :)

Hola!!! Yo lo he hecho con hilo delgado y funciona muy bien, el truco es sumergir el hilo en el pegamento y después aun mojado colocarlo en el globo. :) Inténtelo.
